Dan was a band 7 psychiatric lead and had been a nurse and a manager at Harplands Hospital.

He was also a member of Men Unite, a support group set up by Craig Spillane to help men in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire struggling with depression.

Craig, aged 41, from Newcastle, said: “I met Dan when he came to speak at one of our seminars. He had a room full of 40 men sobbing because of his story. It was so harrowing what he had been through, it left everyone speechless.

“He had to have a year off work but when he came back he was full of energy and worked his way up.

“Dan was a member of the group from day one and from there we developed a friendship.

“He was the guy who really got us up and going. He put us in touch with the right people at the hospital, the police and probation service.

“He could empathise with people with what he had been through.

“It was World Mental Health Day not long before he lost his own battle. Everyone is heartbroken.

“He knew more than anyone what help was out there but he just couldn’t carry on. He just couldn’t find the answers to his questions.

“He helped so many people but in the end he couldn’t help himself. He was such a lovely guy. He was one of the kindest blokes I had ever met.

“He adored his little boy. Right up to the end he was always thinking of everyone else.”

Go Fund Me page  has been set up in his memory with £900 pledged towards the £2,000 target.

The money will go towards supporting Dan’s son.
