Beauty Products You Need to Stay Away from After 40s

Your skin changes as you age, there is no doubt about this, but changing your whole skin care routine to match this is not an easy task. When we hit our 40s, the amount of lipids our skin produces goes down hence our skin becomes dry and rough. Although most would apply more moisturizers on their skin to prevent skin aging, there are some beauty products that you need to stay away from too to avoid expediting premature aging. Here are some beauty products that you need to avoid when you hit your 40s.

Alcohol-rich toners. Most of the toners that are being sold today contain are alcohol-based since they target those with oily or acne-prone skin. This means that if you still use this kind of toner by the time you hit your 40s, you are actually speeding up the drying process of your skin. Switching to hyaluronic acid serum or gel is considerably better as it hdyrates your skin. If you can’t do without your toner, look for one that doesn’t contain alcohol.

Liquid eyeliner. Liquid eyeliners that fall under the quick dry category may look harsher on your eyes as you age. Instead of making your eyes appear smaller and older, make your eyes look more striking with gel based liners instead. This tends to be softer on the eyes and can remove years from your face.

Cakey concealer. When we age, the skin around the eyes and on the mouth becomes thin so if you use a heavy concealer to hide the lines on your skin, you might end up making them more prominent instead. A better option would be the creamy or liquid concealer because you use a small amount only to cover a wide area minus the feeling of heaviness on your skin. After you have applied your concealer, use a cotton swab to remove any excess liquid for a smoother finish.

Shimmer. Shimmer nail polish looked great when you were in your twenties but it might not be appropriate when you are in your 40s because it can put more focus on your wrinkles and lines instead. Nail experts recommend that you go with sheen nail polish instead to dress up your nails.

Metallic blush. This makeup might be your favorite when you were in your twenties or thirties but this can be a source of problem when you age as the shimmer on metallic blushes can settle on the lines of your skin. Makeup artists recommend that you apply blush a bit higher than the apples of your cheeks to make your skin look younger and smoother.

Face powder. If you’ve been using face powder ever since you’ve started wearing makeup, you might want to rethink this habit of yours when you’re in your 40s. A better option would be to use a mattifying liquid foundation as it already has a primer and concealer not to mention matte finish that can hide those fine lines and wrinkles on your face. You can also apply more concealer to add more coverage.

Waterproof mascara. Our eyelashes tend to thin out when we reach our 40s and make time before they grow back. Since waterproof mascara is difficult to remove, you might accidentally pull your eyelashes in the process too. Makeup experts recommend that you opt for washable mascara instead to reduce further damage to your thinning eyelashes.

These are just a few examples of beauty products that you might want to avoid as you age not only to avoid looking older but also to prevent premature aging.
