Want to boost long-term memory, get your caffeine dose!

A lot of studies over the years have shown that caffeine has many health benefits. But the newest one shows that it can boost long-term memory.

In fact, some new study published in the journal “Nature Neuroscience” suggests that if you consume caffeine after a learning session, that may help you to boost long-term memory.

To find out if caffeine has an impact on the long-temp memory, researchers analyzed 160 participants between the ages of 18 and 30. On the first day of the study, the participants were shown pictures of different objects and were asked to identify them as “indoor” or “outdoor” items. After this task, some of the participants were given 200 mg of caffeine in the form of a pill, and some received a placebo tablet. The following day, the participants were shown the same pictures from the day before, as well as some new ones. The investigators asked them to look at the pictures and to identify whether the pictures were “new,” “old” or “similar to the original pictures”. From this last task, the researchers concluded that the participants who took the caffeine were better at identifying pictures that were similar, compared with participants who took the placebo. However, the investigators noted that both groups were able to accurately distinguish whether the pictures were old or new.

The research team conducted another experiments using 100 mg and 300 mg doses of caffeine. They concluded that the enhancing effect of caffeine on consolidation of memory was better after the 200 mg dose compared with the dose of 100 mg, but there was no further improvement after the 300 mg of caffeine, compared with 200 mg. From this we can see that if we want to have the benefit of a better long-term memory, due to the caffeine, we’ll need a dose of at least 200 mg of caffeine.

Another thing that the research team has found is that the memory performance was not improved if the subjects were given caffeine one hour before the test with the picture identification.

Numerous studies have shown that caffeine offers many health benefits. For example, it may not only reduce the risk of liver disease, but it may also reduce suicide risk. But, there are also some studies that show that caffeine could disrupt your sleep patterns even after hours after consuming it and that the caffeine from energy drinks may alter the heart function, which is really dangerous.

However, almost all people react different to caffeine, so you need to find out how you react and you must be careful with the dosage.

Grapefruit – Health Benefits You Didn’t Know About

People started bred grapefruit in the 18th century by crossing an orange with a pomelo. They are called grapefruits because they grew in clusters similar to grapes.

Grapefruits color vary from white or yellow to pink and red. The taste can be sweet and sugary or very acidic and sometimes even bitter. They are very nutritious but low in calories.

Grapefruits have many health benefits, here are some of them:

The grapefruit is a heart-friendly fruit. According to a study, only one grapefruit a day can help you lower your “bad” LDL (Low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels by 15.5% and triglycerides by 27%.

The deep red varieties have higher levels of antioxidants. Be careful because grapefruit increase the potency of some prescription drugs, so maybe you need to check with your doctor before enjoying it.

Rough skin problems?

Since grapefruit is full of vitamin C, which is a mild acid, it can help you fade spots on your skin, such as those on your knees and elbows, by reducing excess production of skin pigment.

If you want to try it, squeeze some of its juice on a teaspoon of sugar, which serves as a mild exfoliant, and rub it over your skin. Avoid the face though because grapefruit can irritate it.

Prevents cancer

Grapefruit, being full of vitamin C and other antioxidants, can help combat the formation of free radicals that are known to cause cancer. Many studies have shown that by consuming grapefruits, you can decrease the risk of prostate and esophageal cancer.

Metabolism booster

One study shows that eating more grapefruit can help you lose weight. It shows that people who ate half a grapefruit before each meal, without changing anything else in their diet, lost an average of three and a half pounds over 12 weeks.

Since grapefruit aid in burning fat and stabilizing blood-sugar, we can easily say that it’s a natural hunger killer.

Firms skin

By eating just one grapefruit a day, you’ll keep your skin smooth and in top shape. This is due to the high concentration of vitamin C in grapefruits which is vital for producing healthy collagen.

Prevention And Treatment Of Shin Splints

Shin splints, the bane of many an athlete who has taken up a new pursuit too enthusiastically, too quickly. A minor case of shin splints can ache for days at a time; more serious injuries may take up to six months to heal. The key to managing shin splints, experts say, is care and moderation. In other words, ignore those twinges at your peril. ROYALTY FREE, MAY BE REUSED.

The term “shin splints” is used for the pain we experience along the shinbone (tibia), which is the large bone in the front of our lower leg. This problem occurs most commonly in dancers, runners and military recruits.

Shin splint in the medicine is known as the medial tibial stress syndrome. It often occurs in athletes who have changed or intensified their training routine.

The best medicine is to prevent shin splints. However, unfortunately, for a lot of new runners it’s already too late, without even realizing it, they’ve already developed this annoying condition.

You should mix up a little and add variety to your training routine. If your training consists only of jogging, you might consider adding strength exercises. Single leg exercises are very helpful when it comes to prevent shin splints. You could try exercises such as: single deadlifts or squats, when you’re not running.

Make sure to stretch really well before your workout. The stretches must be dynamic and not static. You could try lunges and high knees, which will be like a prep for your jogging workout.

This is no good news for the joggers, but you should reduce your mileage – more severe pain means more rest and reducing your training. This is a must if you want your shin splints to heal.

For the soreness and irritation, after your workout, you should apply ice to your shins and keep it on for 10 to 20 minutes, then, remove it for an hour, and repeat the procedure for 10 to 20 more minutes.

A massage would do you good. If  your shin splints is mild to moderate, you could massage your lower legs using a foam roll. However, professional deep tissue massage is the best for treating shin splints.

Too much meat

Screen Time Disputs Teens’ Sleep

Teenagers lying on floor with Ipad and mobile

Today, more and more kids use some kind of an electric device, whether it’s a smartphone, a tablet, a game console, or a TV. But do you know how that affects their sleep?

Some new studies have shown that teenagers who spend hours in front of an electronic device, such as: a cell phone, a tablet, a computer, a game console, or a TV, have more problems sleeping at night.

According to one study, no matter the period of the day when the teen is watching TV or something else, it will affect how long he sleep. The reality is – the longer they pass in front of a screen, the shorter their sleep will be.

A study showed that boys and girls have different preferences when it comes to the types of devices. In reality, girls spend more time with their smartphones and MP3 music players, whereas boys with their game consoles. Actually, teenagers who use electronic device before going to bed, need more than one hour to fall asleep.

The teenagers who use electronic devices for more than 4 hours a day are 49% more likely to need longer than one hour to fall asleep, in comparison to those who use it less than 4 hours a day.

Normally, to feel well rested, teens need 8 to 9 hours of sleep.

It’s still not clear why screen disrupts sleep, but one possibility is that the light from the used electronic device might interfere with the body’s internal clock, which controls the circadian rhythm. Another possibility is that the device may simulate the nervous system, which makes it, again, difficult to fall asleep.

It’s very important that the parents make some rules and be good role models when it comes to the usage of media. They should restrict media use, both during the day and at night, in order to ensure their teens a good night sleep.

How to Prevent Diaper Rash

Bаby’s skin is so perfectly soft and tender. But there’s also a downside to this: easily irritated skin or so called – diaper rash.

Diaper rash is actually the irritated skin of the baby, which is manifesting as a redness around the diaper area. The most common causes for this problem are friction and excessive moisture. Normally, diaper rash is not serous, but it is very uncomfortable for your baby. It usually occurs in older kids, about 9 months old and up, because older babies urinate more.

How to prevent it?

The oldest and best way to avoid diaper rash is, immediately after a bowel movement, to change your baby’s diaper and to rinse the area with warm water. Another important thing is to often check your child’s diaper in order to avoid long exposure to moisture from the urine-soaked diaper.

So, if your baby has a diaper rash, you can try the following tings:

Make sure the diaper is as dry as possible.

If you want to keep the diaper as dry as possible, you can use absorbent diapers, but you need to change them frequently. Also, you can use a good diaper rash cream or ointment, which will prevent the diaper from rubbing against the skin.

Switch diaper brands.

Not all brand of diapers are the same. Maybe your baby is sensitive to certain materials, chemicals or perfumes in the diaper you’re using. So, try and change the brand of the diapers, this might actually help you a lot.

Allow a diaper-free period.

Taking the diaper off your baby will mean a lot to him. This will not only completely and naturally dry the area, but your baby will feel very comfortable and free. It may also prevent future diaper rashes.

Last, but not least, closely monitor your baby’s rash. If it doesn’t go away in a few days, it might be better to call the doctor and have that checked out.
